WJUSD Trustees Appoint New Principal at Sci-Tech Academy

The Woodland Joint Unified School District (WJUSD) Board of Trustees appointed Maria Martinez as principal at Science and Technology Academy at Knights Landing during their Aug. 31 Board Meeting.

“I am so excited to start, it’s a dream come true,” said Martinez. “When I was eight-years-old and attending Grafton Elementary, I decided that I wanted to be a teacher, and then I thought no, one day I’ll become a principal.”

Martinez grew up in Knights Landing and has 23 years of teaching experience within WJUSD.  Most recently, Martinez supported Sci-Tech Academy as an English-language and response-to-intervention specialist. She received her bachelor’s from UC Santa Cruz, and her master’s in education from UC Davis.

“It is exciting to see one of our long-time team members achieve their goal, especially when their achievement also provides fantastic support to our students,” said Tom Pritchard, WJUSD interim superintendent. “We know that Maria will be a great leader because of her excellent teaching expertise and commitment to families.”

Sci-Tech's previous principal, Barbara Herms, was recently appointed as WJUSD's director of elementary education.
