Schools to Participate in Great California Shakeout Drill Oct. 19

On Thursday, Oct. 19, at 10:19 a.m., all schools within Woodland Joint Unified School District will participate in the Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drill to enhance preparedness throughout the community.

During the drill, students and staff will be directed to drop to the ground and take cover during a one-minute drill. Once the earthquake simulation has stopped, participants will gather at their designated emergency evacuation areas. After the drill, each site will evaluate their drill and identify things that went well, as well as learning opportunities for future events.

“It’s important that our students and staff practice our emergency preparedness measures throughout the year,” said Hector Molina, WJUSD Child Welfare Administrator. “This annual earthquake drill creates the opportunity to not only practice our emergency response at schools, but also encourage families to prepare at home.”

Families can help prepare for emergencies by securing furniture and appliances, creating a disaster plan and organizing supplies and important paperwork. For more earthquake preparedness recommendations, visit https://www.earthquakecountry.org/sevensteps/.

More than 10 million people in California are expected to participate in the drill, which started in California in 2008. For more information about this effort, visit www.ShakeOut.org.
