The WJUSD State Preschool Program services are available to income-eligible families who reside in the Woodland Joint Unified School District attendance area. The Grafton State Preschool offers services to children who live out of the attendance area after all qualified Knight's Landing children have been served.
Priority for enrollment of eligible students is based on the following:
- Priority is given to child protective services children.
- Families with the lowest monthly income are admitted first.
- Four year old children have priority over three year olds. "Four year olds" are defined as those children who turn four on or before December 2 of their preschool year.
- Children identified as limited English proficient.
- Eligible students residing in the school's attendance area have priority over those students living in other attendance areas.
- Children who are income eligible and with an Individual Family Service Plan (IFSP) that identifies a State Preschool class as an appropriate placement.
A WJUSD State Preschool Program incorporates developmentally appropriate curriculum. The WJUSD Preschool Program instructional program:
- Aligns activities with the California Department of Education Child Development Desired Results for Families and Children (DRDP).
- Responds to and builds upon children's interests and ideas.
- Provides opportunities for children to learn pre-literacy and numeracy skills.
- Provides opportunities for children to make choices, follow through on plans, and develop problem-solving approaches.
- Offers small group activities as well as individual activities.
- Offers active times and quiet times.
- Provides developmentally appropriate materials that are convenient for children to find, use and put away.
- Offers activities or interest centers that include creativity pretend play, making and building, science and cooking, rhythm and music, social problem solving, sensory exploration, large and small muscle activities.
The WJUSD State Preschool Program is staffed with a Preschool Lead Teacher, a Preschool Instructor and a parent volunteer or assistant. All staff meets the state licensing requirements. All parent volunteers have a TB clearance and are under the supervision of the teachers. Adult/child ratios is one adult for every eight children as required by state guidelines.
We believe that parents are their children's first and most influential teachers and that the early years lay the foundation for children's success in school and life. The WJUSD State Preschool Program supports parents by providing them with information to meet their educational and parenting needs. Parent Workshops are offered throughout the year by all the State Preschool Lead Teachers, the Teacher on Special Assignment, and other community resources.
