dingle elementary expanding to schoolwide dual enrollment

dingle elementary expanding to schoolwide dual enrollment

We are excited to share that Dingle Elementary is moving toward a schoolwide Dual Immersion (DI) program starting in the 2026-2027 school year!

Over time, all Dingle students will have the opportunity to learn in both English and Spanish, building strong academic skills while becoming confident, bilingual learners. Our goal is to support every student, whether they are learning English, Spanish, or both, so they can thrive academically and socially.

This is an important milestone for our school and an excellent opportunity for our students and families.

Research shows that dual immersion programs offer many long-term benefits for students, including:
  • Stronger academic achievement for both English Learners and native English speakers
  • Improved thinking skills, such as flexibility, focus, and problem-solving

  • Greater cultural awareness and appreciation for diverse perspectives—essential skills in today’s global world

  • More consistent instruction across classrooms as students move through grade levels

  • Stronger teacher collaboration and a shared schoolwide vision for high-quality teaching and learning

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is Dual Immersion (DI)?

Dual Immersion is a program in which students learn academic content in both English and Spanish. The goal is for students to become strong readers, writers, and thinkers in both languages over time.

Isn’t Dingle Elementary already a Dual Immersion school? How will this be different?

Currently, Dingle Elementary offers one Dual Immersion class per grade and one non-Dual Immersion class. Beginning in the 2026-2027 school year,  both TK and Kinder classes will only be Dual Immersion classes. Each subsequent school year, an additional grade level class will be added.

Why is Dingle Elementary School moving toward a unified, schoolwide Dual Immersion (DI) program?

This decision was based on declining enrollment in non-DI classes and underperforming academic scores. Making Dingle a schoolwide DI program will create a research-based language program with strong academic results. In addition, this model will enable stronger teacher collaboration.

How Will the Expansion Work?

We want families to feel confident and informed as we begin this transition, so we are taking a thoughtful, gradual approach to expanding the current Dual Immersion strand:

  • In the 2026–2027 school year, the Dual Immersion program will expand to include all classes in Transitional Kindergarten (TK) and Kindergarten.

  • Each year after that, one additional grade level will be added, allowing students to continue in the program as they grow.

  • Over time, Dingle Elementary will become a fully schoolwide Dual Immersion program.

This thoughtful, gradual approach ensures strong instruction, ongoing teacher training, and support for students and families every step of the way. Regardless of your child’s home language, they will receive the support they need to succeed.

We’re looking forward to eventually providing all Dingle Elementary School students with the opportunities this expansion will bring and the strong foundation it will create for their future.

Does my child need to speak Spanish to join the program?

No. Students do not need to speak Spanish to participate. The program is designed for students from all language backgrounds, and teachers provide support so all students can succeed. DI classes include both English-only and Spanish-speaking students. Student composition is carefully planned when students are admitted to the program.

Will my child still learn English?

Yes. Students in Dual Immersion learn both English and Spanish. English and Spanish language development are a priority, and students have the opportunity to build strong reading and writing skills in both languages.

How will this affect students already enrolled at Dingle?

There is already a Dual Immersion strand in place at Dingle Elementary. The program will expand to all classes in a grade level, starting with TK and Kindergarten in 2026–27, and continue to include those in the next grade level each year. This gradual approach ensures students and teachers are well supported as the program expands to eventually include all classes in every grade.

Does this change mean the Dual  Immersion Program will be required for my Dingle Elementary student?

If your student is entering TK or Kinder in the 2026-2027 school year, Dingle will only offer DI in those two grades. Grades 1-6 will continue a non-DI class.

What will happen with enrollment if I am not interested in Dual Immersion for my son/daughter?

If you are not interested in DI in grades TK-K, an alternative site will be offered to your student.

How are teachers prepared to support Dual Immersion?

Our teachers receive ongoing training, planning time, and instructional support to ensure high-quality teaching in both languages.

If my student attends a school other than Dingle, can I enroll them at Dingle Elementary so they can participate in Dingle’s Dual Immersion program?

Yes! Starting on March 2nd, the 2026-2027 DI application will be available for all families online.

When is the next informational community meeting on this?

The next informational community meeting will be held virtually on Wednesday, Feb. 4, from 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. Click here to join.

A previous informational community meeting was held on Nov. 19, in person and virtually. For your reference, you may access the slide deck here.

Who can I contact if I have more questions?

If you have questions or would like more information, please contact Dingle Elementary School Principal Laura Valencia at laura.valencia@wjusd.org or 530-662-7084.

We are excited about the opportunities this expansion will create and the strong foundation it will provide for students now and in the years ahead.

We look forward to partnering with you on this journey!
